Steel Column Load Carrying Capacity
This project was part of a forensic investigation of the collapse of an industrial steel building. The investigators found two major facts: one related to overloading and the other related to structural defects. To determine the responsibilities of involved parties, it is critical to assess the extent to which the structural defect affected the load carrying capacity of the building. Our job was to carry out a load carrying simulation for the square tube steel columns until there was a complete collapse. The square tubes had slits due to defects in the supposed to be full penetration longitudinal welds. Our simulation featured material and geometric nonlinearity in order to accurately capture the instability of the global and local buckling as well as the yielding of the column.
WIG craft simulation
WIG (or Ekranoplan)
is a special type of aircraft that flies close to the water surface and takes advantage of the wing-in-ground effect. A
scaled composite
model was developed for testing a design concept by one of our customers. The scaled model was capable of transporting 2 persons including the pilot. This project included the preparation of the finite element model from design sketches and various structural analyses, to the study of structural integrity and external flow CFD simulation in order to analyze aero-dynamic properties, and the optimization of wing profile as well as several structural components of the craft.

Connection Plate OPptimization
The objective of this project was to optimize the connection plate that transferred a set of forces from the pins to the bulkhead an aerospace structure. The problem was to find a plate that has the minimum weight and, at the same time, a satisfactory structural strength. The plate was required to lie within a pre-defined design space.
To obtain a conceptual design, structural topology optimization was performed. The result of the topology optimization is shown on the picture to the right. Based on the result of topology optimization, a preliminary design was constructed for further optimization. During this stage, the customer design engineer was consulted to make sure that manufacturability and other design requirements were satisfied.
Shape optimization was performed to further refine the shape of the preliminary design. Shape optimization also effectively removed stress concentrations.
